These are instructions for the original SAMi App created for the SAMi-2 camera (with the QR code on the front of the camera). If you are looking for the SAMi-3 instruction manual, click here.
If you need installation instructions click here.
MAIN SCREEN
This is the main monitoring screen. You can zoom and position the video image by using pinch and drag gestures on the image area. You can also double-tap to zoom in.
MOTION AND ALARM METERS
The green bar on the right above the camera icon is the motion activity meter. The height of the green bar indicates the current amount of motion. The pointer on the bar indicates the motion threshold.
The red bar above the bell icon is the alarm meter. The height of the red bar indicates the current alarm level. The pointer on the bar indicates the alarm threshold.
You can adjust the motion threshold and the alarm threshold on the Settings Screen.
When the green bar is above the motion threshold pointer, the red bar slowly rises. When the green bar is below the motion threshold pointer, the red bar goes down, first slowly then more rapidly the longer the motion meter remains below its threshold. If the red bar rises above the alarm threshold pointer, the alarm sounds (if the alarm is enabled on the Settings Screen).
STATUS INDICATORS
The icons In the upper left of the video image indicate status.
This icon indicates that SAMi is receiving images from the camera. The number in the center of the icon indicates the frame rate, which ranges from 0 to 8. A frame rate of 3 or higher indicates a good signal.
This icon indicates that SAMi is not receiving images from the camera. Check that the camera is turned on and connected to the network and that your iOS device is also connected to the network.
This icon indicates that SAMi is operating on battery power. Because SAMi continuously performs image processing, the battery will run down in a few hours. We recommend that you keep your iOS device plugged in and charging when SAMi is running.
When this icon is displayed above the red alarm meter, it indicates that the audible alarm is disabled and will not sound. To turn the alarm on, touch the circle-slash icon. To turn the alarm off, touch the alarm enable indicator (the bell icon above the red bar).
NOTE: The alarm is turned off automatically for two minutes after it is triggered to prevent the alarm immediately sounding again. After two minutes with no motion, the alarm automatically turns on. You can turn the alarm on faster by touching the indicator. You can also use the scheduler on the Settings Screen to set the alarm to turn on and off automatically.
MENU OPTIONS
At the bottom of the screen are the menu buttons. These hide automatically after a few seconds of inactivity to prevent you from accidentally pressing them.
To reveal the menu buttons, press the “<<Menu” button.
The Clock button changes the display to the Clock Screen.
The Mic button turns on and off the sound from the camera microphone. The button is green when the microphone audio is turned on.
The Motion button displays the live motion screen overlaid with a green border that indicates the area on which the camera is focused. The camera ignores any motion outside the green border. Motion inside the border is displayed in red to help you decide what level of settings you want. You can use the Settings Screen to adjust the border area.
While the live motion display is on, this Motion button changes to “Normal." Touch it to return to the normal live video.
The Lock button locks the SAMi app. While the SAMi app is locked, motion detection is still running. Locking the SAMi app prevents accidental changes to the app while you have the iOS device in your pocket.
The Rec's button changes the display to the Recordings Screen. The button is green when new, unviewed recordings are available. It is amber when new recordings are in the process of being transferred from the camera to the iPhone or iPod.
The Help button changes the display to the Help Screen.
The Setup button changes the display to the Settings Screen where you can customize the behavior of the alarms, scheduler, audio, and display. MUTE ALARM SCREEN
When an alarm is triggered, it sounds continuously until you touch the Mute Alarm button. Touch the button to turn off the alarm and switch back to the Live Video Screen.
The alarm is disabled automatically for two minutes to prevent it from immediately sounding again. The system will count down from 2 minutes and will display in clock form when the alarm will turn back on again. To manually override the alarm disable period and turn the alarm on again, touch the yellow countdown button above the motion and alarm meters. If motion occurs during the countdown period the clock will reset to two minutes and continue the countdown. This is to prevent rearming the alarm when the activity is ongoing in the monitored area.

CLOCK SCREEN
The Clock Screen displays the time and status icons that are identical to those on the live video screen. The circle-slash icon is displayed in the upper right when the alarm is disabled. (You can touch the icon to re-enable the alarm. You cannot disable the alarm from this screen.) Touch anywhere else on the screen to switch to the live video screen.
You can use the Settings Screen to configure the SAMi app to automatically switch to the clock after a specified period of inactivity and to adjust the brightness of the Clock Screen. Note that all monitoring functions continue to operate when the Clock Screen displays.
RECORDINGS SCREEN
You use the Recordings Screen to access all the SAMi recordings. Each recording is listed as a separate entry, listed in reverse order with the most recent recordings at the top. Each entry includes the date, time, and duration of the recording.
Recording lengths range from 3 seconds to 10 minutes. If motion continues longer than 10 minutes, SAMi creates multiple, sequential recordings.
Recordings are made whenever there is motion, even if the motion is not enough to exceed the motion threshold. Recordings that are made near or during the time the alarm sounds are marked in red. Even if you previously turned off the alarm, SAMi still marks the recordings.
To play a recording touch an entry.
To delete a single recording, swipe from right to left (or left to right) on the entry you wish to delete. Then touch the displayed Delete button. WARNING: You cannot undo the delete operation.
To delete multiple recordings touch Select in the upper right. The recordings will be redisplayed with a circle symbol to the left. Touch the circle next to any number of recordings to select them for deletion. You may also automatically select all recordings or only unlocked recordings. Touch the Delete Selected option at the bottom left to implement the deletion or touch Clear to deselect.
WARNING: You cannot undo the delete operation. When you are done reviewing the recordings, press the “Done” button in the upper left to return to the Live Video Screen. The Help Screen displays the copyright notice and credits.
When you play a video, use the standard iOS player controls. When a video completes, the next one automatically starts. Press the “Older” and “Newer” buttons to skip back and forward through the recordings. Press the “Done” button when you want to return to the list of recordings.
HELP SCREEN
If you experience unexpected behavior or a system failure and you have enabled email on your iOS device, you can help us by sending a log file to HiPass Design LLC support. Press the “Email Support…” button to compose an email with an attached app log file. You can edit the email to include additional information that describes the issue. The log file only includes information about the operation of the app; no recordings of any kind are included. After you send a support email, press the “Clear Log…” button to release the small amount of memory it uses.
SETTINGS SCREEN
You use the Settings Screen to configure the SAMi app. The screen has multiple sections, described below.
NOTE: When you set or change any option on this screen, press the Done button to apply the new configuration.
RESET BUTTON
Press the Reset button in the upper right to restore all the settings to their defaults. This does not change your camera settings.
CAMERAS SECTION
The Cameras section lists all your camera options. The cameras on your iOS device are always listed and you can use these cameras for trying out the app or for demonstration purposes.
NOTE that the SAMi app only makes recordings from the SAMi network camera. It does not make recordings from the built-in cameras on your iOS device.
If you have not yet set up a SAMi network camera, you can do it on this screen. If you already set up a camera, it is displayed in the list of available cameras.
The check mark indicates the camera that is currently being used by SAMi. The SAMi network camera entry also shows the camera IP address and the camera status. Press the blue arrow to change to the Camera Settings screen. See the Installation Guide (on the Support/Downloads page) for details on how to set up your SAMi Network Camera.
ALARMS SECTION
Enable Alarm – The normal setting is ON. OFF prevents the alarm from ever sounding. When the alarm is set of OFF, all other operations continue normally, including the marking of recordings.
Motion thresh. – Sets the motion threshold. A lower setting is more sensitive to motion; a higher setting is less sensitive. A typical setting is in the range of 10-25%.
Alarm Thresh. – Sets the alarm threshold. The setting is calibrated in time. For example, a setting of 20s means that the alarm will sound in when 20 seconds of continuous motion occurs that exceeds the motion threshold. A lower threshold number causes the alarm to sound faster but it might cause more false alarms. A higher threshold number might have fewer false alarms but also might miss shorter events.
Border Size – Sets the size of the motion border region. The border defines the area that is the central monitored area for the camera; everything outside the border is the border region. Motion that occurs in the border region does not trigger the alarm but it still triggers recordings. A higher setting increases the size of the border region, which decreases the size of the central monitored area.
Smart Edge - When this feature is turned on it modifies the use of the border area set in the border size variable. The purpose of this feature is to ignore motion that begins within the green area for purposes of the alarm. As long as motion continues in any area, the alarm is suppressed through the use of the two-minute countdown clock.
Alert on Camera Fault – This setting causes a periodic beep alert to sound if SAMi is not receiving images from the camera. The normal setting is ON.
Alert on Low Battery – This setting causes a periodic beep alert to sound if the iOS device battery is below 20%. The normal setting is ON. SCHEDULE SECTION
You can use this section to configure the alarm to automatically turn on and off on a schedule. When the schedule is enabled, the alarm turns off at the Alarm Off time and turns on at the Alarm On time.
Note that you can manually turn the alarm on and off at any time by using the alarm indicator on the Live Video Screen. Because the alarm schedule simply acts as if you had manually turned the alarm on or off at the indicated times, it cannot guarantee that the alarm is on between the On time and Off time.
SCHEDULE SECTION
You can use this section to configure the alarm to automatically turn on and off on a schedule. When the schedule is enabled, the alarm turns off at the Alarm Off time and turns on at the Alarm On time. Because the alarm schedule simply acts as if you had manually turned the alarm on or off at the indicated times, it cannot guarantee that the alarm is on between the On time and Off time
RECORDINGS SCHEDULE
You may turn on the scheduling function for the creation of recordings. Recordings made after the scheduled off time and before the scheduled on time will not be saved. The same time settings will apply to the schedule for alarm on/off and recordings on/off.
AUDIO SECTION
Use these volume bars to specify the microphone and alarm volumes.
Mic Volume– Sets the level of microphone sensitivity; the higher the level, the more sounds the microphone picks up. The microphone is automatically turned on for one minute when you press the Mute Alarm button after an alarm sounds.
Alarm Volume– Sets how loud the alarm sounds. WARNING: If you set the alarm level too low, you may not hear it when it sounds. DISPLAY SECTION
Screen Timeout to Clock – When this setting is set to ON, the display automatically switches to the Clock Screen after the specified Timeout Delay.
Timeout Delay – This setting is calibrated in time. For example, a setting of 60s means that the display switches to the Clock Screen after 60 seconds.
Brightness – Sets the brightness of the Live Video Screen.
Clock Brightness – Sets the brightness of the Clock Screen. Typically, you should set this brightness level very low to reduce the light levels on your nightstand.
