When choosing the best location for your SAMi Camera, the important part is that the person being monitored can clearly be seen when moving from the live live view in the SAMi3 app.
Further detail and case specific advice can be found below.
But first...
Yes, SAMi can...
- Usually monitor for movement happening underneath pillows and covers
- Usually monitor for movement through the bars of a crib or enclosed sleeping spaces
- Monitor for movement in any light level, including pitch dark.
The real test is this:
If you'd be able to see it with your own eyes, your SAMi Camera should be able to
For most children and adults, we typically recommend placing the SAMi Camera...
- Opposite the foot of the bed (slightly off to one side or the other is fine)
- Between 4-10 feet away from the person being monitored
Abnormal movements in the body
(full body, torso, legs, arms etc.)
Camera Placement

Ideal Positioning |
Also OK |
If you're looking to monitor specifically for facial movements, move the camera closer and position it to ensure it has a clear view. In many cases, people find mounting SAMi to the ceiling the most effective strategy.
Abnormal movements in the face
(face grimacing, lip smacking etc.)
Ideal positioning |
Probably OK (But not great) |
For babies / young children / those utilizing an enclosed sleeping area, you may want to mount SAMi above the bed (such as on the ceiling) but this may not always be necessary. If you're able to see fairly clearly between the bars of the crib (or sides of the enclosure), you may be able to still monitor effectively through the sides. Again the key is insuring you'd be able to see the person moving through the live view (if you can see it, your SAMi Camera should see it too).

IMPORTANT: If you are mounting the camera on the ceiling over a bed or in a location where it could potentially fall and hurt someone, do not use the command strip mounting solution. Use the provided screws and wall anchors to properly secure the camera from falling!
Note: You will be able to adjust the monitoring border from the app as well. To learn more about adjusting the monitoring border, please review our Overview of SAMi App Settings & Features
Tip: If necessary, be sure to choose a location where the cord will be out of reach of young children.
